The meltdown can seem to come from nowhere. But the pressure often starts building much earlier.
A difficult transition. Too much noise. Tiredness, uncertainty or a demand that required a skill your child couldn’t access in that moment.
One pressure added to another, until the final request became more than they could manage.
Before the Meltdown helps you connect the reaction you see with the pressures that came before it.
You’ll learn to recognise your child’s patterns and earlier signs of struggle, so you can reduce the pressure and help them manage one next step before everything becomes too much.
When everyday life with your child starts to feel unpredictable
The same child can manage something one day and become overwhelmed by it the next, leaving you constantly watching, adjusting and trying to work out what changed.
It’s exhausting. And when the advice in the parenting books doesn’t work for your child, it’s easy to start wondering whether you’re doing something wrong.
What you notice
They manage while you’re out, then fall apart when you get home.
A small request, transition or change of plan becomes an enormous reaction.
Something they managed yesterday feels impossible today.
What you find yourself doing
Planning the day around what could become too much, hoping to avoid another difficult moment.
Explaining, repeating instructions or trying consequences, only to see their distress grow.
Wondering whether your child won’t do something—or genuinely can’t manage it yet.
What changes when you can see the struggle earlier
Before the Meltdown helps you move from reacting once everything has become too much to recognising your child’s struggle earlier.
You’ll learn a practical way to notice patterns, understand what your child can manage in different moments and respond with support that fits your child and your family.
Notice the struggle earlier
Instead of every meltdown feeling as though it came from nowhere, you’ll learn to notice the pressures building and recognise your child’s earlier signs of struggle.
Know what to do in the hard moment
When your child starts to struggle, you’ll have a practical response to return to: use fewer words, reduce the pressure and help them manage one next step.
Support skills over time
You’ll learn to recognise when your child cannot access a skill in the moment—and when they are ready for your guidance. This helps you support the hard moment first, then teach and practise the skill when your child can listen and learn.
Trust what you know about your child
Instead of treating every hard moment as proof that you’re failing, you’ll have a practical framework you can apply to your own child.
You’ll understand more of what they are struggling to manage, know how to support them and feel more confident trusting what you see.
What’s included in Before the Meltdown
Before the Meltdown brings the teaching and practical resources together in one place, so you can work through the programme at your own pace and apply what you learn to your own child.
Four short, watch-anytime workshops
Learn how pressures can build before a meltdown, recognise your child’s earlier signs of struggle, understand when “won’t” may really mean “can’t yet”, and explain what you’re seeing to other caregivers.
Four practical downloadable tools
Each workshop has a matching tool to help you explore your own child’s patterns, early signs, changing capacity and support needs.
You can complete them as you go and return to them whenever you need to slow things down and make sense of a difficult moment.
Before the Meltdown Workshop Companion
The companion ebook brings the key teaching from all four workshops together in one downloadable guide.
Use it to revisit the ideas, reflect on what you’re noticing and continue working through the programme in a way that fits your family.
You’ll also receive a short welcome video to help you begin and a closing video to bring the four parts together.

-
No. Before the Meltdown is designed to be useful whether your child has a diagnosis, you’re waiting for an assessment, or you’re simply beginning to notice that everyday situations can sometimes become overwhelming. You can start with the child in front of you and the patterns you’re already seeing.
-
The workshops have been created with mums of young children in mind. The examples focus on the kinds of challenges that often come up in the early years — things like transitions, demands, getting out the door, mealtimes, public places and big reactions when everything becomes too much.
-
There are four short, practical workshops, each around 15 - 20 minutes. They’re designed to give you useful ideas without asking you to sit through hours of content at once.
-
That isn’t the promise of Before the Meltdown. Meltdowns can still happen, even when we understand our children very well. The aim is to help you notice more of what may be building beforehand, recognise earlier signs of struggle, and have more options for supporting your child before everything becomes too much.
-
That’s one of the things we explore in the workshops. You’ll learn a simple way to think about behaviour through the lens of skills, demands and overload, so you can make a more informed decision about whether your child needs a boundary, more support, or a smaller next step.
-
Absolutely. Your Unique Child is mum-centred because that’s who I primarily speak to, but the ideas and tools can be used by dads, grandparents and other caregivers who want to better understand and support a child.
-

Before the Meltdown is the support I needed when my boys were young
I’m Christa, founder of Your Unique Child and mum to two neurodivergent sons.
When Pete was young, I didn’t understand why everyday requests could become so difficult for him. I was told to be firmer and more consistent, and when that increased his distress, I blamed myself—and sometimes blamed him too.
Over the years raising Pete and Sam, I learned to recognise what was becoming too much, understand what they could manage in different moments and respond with support that fitted their needs.
I created Before the Meltdown to give other mums that understanding much earlier, with practical tools they can use in everyday family life.
You don’t need to wait for a diagnosis to begin understanding and supporting your child.
Understand your child. Know how to help. Trust yourself as their mum.
Your child isn’t broken—and you’re not failing.
Before the Meltdown gives you a practical process for understanding the hard moments and responding in a way that fits what your child can manage.
